Speaker announcement: Georgina Laming of Hope not Hate

Speaker announcement for Changing hearts and minds: Georgina Laming, campaigns and communications director, Hope not Hate

We are delighted to welcome Hope not Hate’s Georgina Laming to the programme for Changing hearts and minds, our flagship event taking place in London on Wednesday 4 June.

Changing hearts and minds: Countering harmful narratives will blend cutting edge science and data analysis with communications best practice to equip delegates with tools to shape a more just and equal world.

Georgina will be bringing a wealth of experience to her session, which is focused on understanding voter profiles and motivations

Far-right governments are restricting civil society. Trump has defunded USAID and cut support for gender equality, immigration and LGBTQ+ rights. The Netherlands has slashed funding for women’s rights, climate action and education, while Italy has criminalized NGO migrant rescues.

The UK is not immune to this erosion of rights, funding and democratic accountability. As Reform UK makes political gains, rhetoric is becoming more hostile. Charities and trade unions must grasp these trends to safeguard their work and the communities they serve.

Central to challenging hostile rhetoric is understanding voter profiles and motivations. Georgina’s session will draw upon an extensive polling exercise by Hope not Hate to explore why and how public attitudes are shifting, which issues resonate most with different voter groups, and how to communicate in ways that build common ground and push back against regressive narratives.

Georgina has spent a decade campaigning for change and movement building. She is currently director of campaigns and communications at Hope not Hate where she looks after the strategy around its campaigns, public affairs, communications and fundraising outputs. Recent projects include: the successful campaign to deplatform Andrew Tate from mainstream social media sites; partnering with The News Agents podcast for a special investigation into GB News owner Paul Marshall which was nominated for Scoop of the Year at the Political Podcast Awards; and directing the campaigns and communications strategy against mayoral candidate Susan Hall after her racist social media activity was revealed.

She joins Steve Ballinger, director of communications at British Future, and other experts on the programme.

Changing hearts and minds: Countering harmful narratives offers participants the chance to learn and share. Presentations from experts, examples of best practice and group discussion will be accompanied with a practical session designed to help participants cement knowledge, enhance skills and network with their peers.
