We are delighted to welcome British Future’s Steve Ballinger to the programme for Changing hearts and minds, our flagship event taking place in London on Wednesday 4 June.
Changing hearts and minds: Countering harmful narratives will blend cutting edge science and data analysis with communications best practice to equip delegates with tools to shape a more just and equal world.
Steve’s session will focus on creating positive emotional appeal: ways to make counter-narratives emotionally compelling and psychologically effective.
In a world where divisive narratives shape public opinion, how can charities and trade unions craft counter-narratives that truly resonate? In this engaging session, Steve will explore how to make alternative messages not just heard but felt.
Drawing on psychological insights, polling data and real-world examples, Steve will unpack some of the emotional triggers that drive belief systems and share practical strategies for framing messages in ways that build empathy, shift perspectives and inspire action.
Steve Ballinger has worked in media and communications roles in the voluntary sector for over 25 years, including at Amnesty International, Shelter, VSO and at thinktank British Future, where he has spent the last 10 years as director of communications. Steve has co-authored a range of reports examining public attitudes to immigration, integration and diversity to understand how they shape effective communications on these often-divisive issues.
He joins Georgina Laming, campaigns and communications director at Hope not Hate, and other experts on the programme.
Changing hearts and minds: Countering harmful narratives offers participants blended learning. Presentations from experts, examples of best practice and group discussion will be accompanied by a practical session designed to help participants cement knowledge, enhance skills and network with their peers.
